Around 50 vehicles have been marked with what appears to be human blood in the German municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, police confirm police.

Automobiles, building surfaces and postboxes were vandalized, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they stated in a release.

Police report they were contacted during the night on Wednesday evening, when a resident observed that a automobile in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued substance.

The substance had been applied in the shape of a swastika, they added.

Officers then discovered numerous other marked cars and house walls in the adjacent neighborhood.

These symbols are prohibited in Germany under legislation prohibiting the public display of Nazi symbols.

Officials report initial examinations show the fluid was most likely human bodily fluid.

"Currently there is no indication as to where it came from; investigators are currently not cognizant of any injuries in association with the occurrence," they stated.

Local authorities stated they were working "to resolve the mystery" and have requested to the residents for details.

A high-ranking official said the attack rendered him speechless and required to be solved rapidly.

"This event strikes at the core of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the extremist violent incident half a decade ago," he posted on a platform, recalling the killing of nine individuals by a gunman targeting individuals of migrant background in 2020.
